Atman: Is It Soul Or Internal Self?

Atman, in Hinduism, is the immortal soul. The word Atman originally meant breath: the fundamental essence of life. It was later applied to the universal essence of which all living beings are composed. In this sense, it is often used interchangeably with Purusha, meaning self and which refers to the universal self or soul.
