Shivalinga

The Real Meaning Of Shivalinga

Shivalinga – The word linga itself is derived from the Sanskrit word “liṅga” which means “mark, sign, or symbol.” The Hindu god Shiva is often represented as a linga, and is sometimes called Ardhanarishvara, meaning “half-man, half-woman (and not half-man, half-woman).”

The linga is also associated with the phallus or penis of Shiva. However, when the word linga is used to describe a form of Shiva, it means something different than when it is used to describe a form of Vishnu. In Agama texts, the word linga has been interpreted as long, with ga meaning to emerge or create and cosmos of universe. On this basis, some scholars have argued that the words Linga Purana and Lingopanisad refer to a cosmological treatise rather than one devoted to deities like Shiva or Vishnu.
